Class 1 HGV training in North Shields with modern artics

Category C+E route. Reversing, coupling and uncoupling practice. Skills assessment and test preparation.

Why this route feels more manageable

Modern training vehicles

Current articulated HGVs help you practise in vehicles that feel relevant to real commercial work.

Manoeuvre work made clear

We break reversing, coupling and uncoupling into simple stages so you can practise each part properly.

Training shaped to your level

A skills review lets us focus on the gaps that matter instead of repeating what you already do well.

Learn to handle larger articulated vehicles

Moving up to Class 1 can feel like a big change because the vehicle length, trailer movement and road space all demand more planning. We teach the Category C+E route in modern articulated HGVs so your practice reflects the kind of vehicle you may meet at work. From our North Shields training base, we build the core habits step by step, starting with cab and vehicle familiarisation, mirror use, road positioning, braking control and gear use. We then help you understand how the tractor and trailer behave through bends, roundabouts and junctions, so you can make calmer decisions instead of feeling rushed by the size of the vehicle.

Practise the manoeuvres employers expect

Class 1 work is not only about driving forward with confidence. We also spend time on controlled reversing, coupling and uncoupling, and the safety checks that sit around a tractor and trailer. We start with a skills assessment so we know what needs the most practice, then shape the training around that. As your control improves, we use repeated exercises and supervised road driving to prepare you for the manoeuvre standard and the relevant driving tests, giving you a clearer route from first assessment to licence progression.

Frequently asked questions

What does Class 1 HGV training cover?

We cover the Category C+E skills needed for articulated and drawbar combinations, including cab checks, observation, road positioning, braking, gear use, reversing, coupling, uncoupling and preparation for the relevant practical tests.

Do we need Category C before Class 1?

We can talk through your current licence position and the route that applies to you. Before training starts, we check what entitlement and progress you already have so we can plan the practical Class 1 training properly.

Will we practise reversing and trailer safety?

Yes. We spend time on controlled reversing, coupling and uncoupling, and the safety checks around the tractor and trailer. Repeating these exercises helps you understand reference points, observation and how to correct position calmly.
